Freelance ski instructors get schooled in business law

December 12th, 2009 · Comments Off

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies cited four people on Dec. 4 for allegedly offering ski lessons without the proper business licenses, said Lt. Les Lovell in a statement this week.
Deputies issued the citations during multiple sting operations at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The stings targeted people advertising their services as ski and snowboard instructors, Lovell said.
All four individuals were charged with misdemeanor crimes and released on promise to appear citations.
When ski or snowboard lessons are offered for profit, a business license is necessary, Lovell said. Ski areas that use special use permits also require independent concessionaires to obtain permission from the permit holder before operating, Lovell said.
None of the cited individuals had business licenses from El Dorado County or permission from Heavenly to operate a business on their leased property. Lovell said.
Of the four people who were arrested a

Never a dull moment at Tahoe Adventure Film Festival

December 11th, 2009 · Comments Off

The Tahoe Adventure Film Fest is not your typical drawn-out, somber film festival. Imagine a series of movies where hurling your parachute-clad body off a massive cliff is the least wacky activity on the list. Also known as the “Don’t-Tell-Mom-I’m-Doing-This Fest,” it showcases the best few action minutes from a rowdy range of new sports movies.

Now in its sixth year, the festival typically draws sellout crows. Apparently footage of guys free-falling, back flipping and chasing each other down-slope with helmet cams will never be boring. In addition to helmet cams and heli shots, this year’s footage includes a surf cam and a riverside cable cam. It’s an era when uber-close camera angles add such reality, the audience can feel like participants. Plus, seeing the sport from the athlete’s view is crucial because no one would believe a normal description.

This venture into crazy celluloid is a natural off-shoot of its mad, mad host, Todd Offen

White rallies to top Copper Grand Prix qualifying

December 11th, 2009 · Comments Off

COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. – The back-to-back double corks were heating things up by the end of the day at Copper Mountain as Shaun White of Carlsbad, Calif., and Louie Vito of Sandy, Utah, went one and two in both their heats and the overall qualifications for the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix.
White, in classic White fashion, came in from behind for the number one spot with some double doubles after sitting second to Vito at the finish of the first run.
But, like the dancing man said, he and White are treating it all like practice and pushing the boundaries where they can. Case in point – Vito’s back-to-back doubles. It was a first for him to throw the move in any form of competition.
“I’ve got a few different spins I’m going to mix up, but I just want to keep it consistent. I was already in, which was all I cared about,” Vito said. “I think Shaun felt the same way. It’s always practice and you’ve just got to step it up, take it up

December 11th, 2009 · Comments Off

SUOMU, Finland – Jesper Bjornlund of Sweden won his first moguls World Cup title in the freestyle season-opener on Friday, while reigning U.S. national champion Bryon Wilson finished a career-best second.
Wilson was joined on the podium by teammate and reigning World Cup moguls champion Hannah Kearney, who finished third behind in the women’s event.
“It’s my best result ever,” said Wilson, who qualified ninth. “I just pushed out of the gate, did my double full and then charged the middle section. I knew it was a good run.”
South Shore’s Sho Kashima placed 37th with a score of 20.52 from the judges.
Bjornlund had 24.41 points while Wilson, a former junior world champion, scored 24.34.
“Great stuff for Bryon,” moguls coach Scott Rawles said. “He’s had a lot of success at a lot of different levels, but this is the first time he’s been on the World Cup podium. We knew it was going to happen and that he had t

Bode Miller fifth in World Cup super combined

December 11th, 2009 · Comments Off

VAL D’ISERE, France – Bode Miller is happy to pick up points if not victories.
The two-time overall World Cup champion finished fifth Friday in a super combined in which Austrians Benjamin Raich and Marcel Hirscher went 1-2. Austria’s Romed Baumann nearly made it a sweep, sharing third place with Italy’s Manfred Moelgg.
“I didn’t feel very good,” Miller said. “But it was important that I get some points because I hadn’t scored a lot last year. We need to get our spots back and get back in the top 30.”
Teammate Ted Ligety, who won the Olympic combined at Turin, skidded off the course. He was leading by more than a second at the time. Ligety is seventh in the overall standings, the only American in the top 10.
World Cup leader Carlo Janka missed a chance to become the first skier to win four straight World Cup races since Hermann Maier in 1998. Janka won a super combined, downhill and giant slalom last week in Beaver Creek,

Bleiler rules Grand Prix pipe qualifying

December 10th, 2009 · Comments Off

COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. – The Copper halfpipe was stacked with big air and beauty Thursday as the best women in the sport hit up the 22-foot walls for qualification runs at the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix. And, to no one’s surprise, 2006 Olympic medalists Gretchen Bleiler of Aspen, Colo., and Kelly Clark of Mt. Snow, Vt., were the first- and second-place qualifiers of the day.
The sky in Summit County, was clear and blue as the women crippled, grabbed and spun their names into Saturday’s Grand Prix finals, and X Games gold medalist Bleiler was beaming after some high-quality riding.
“I had a really good run today. I’m feeling confident; I had a lot of fun and I am excited for finals on Saturda,” said Bleiler, whose top run scored 47.10.
There were a number of top riders in the 48-competitor field who didn’t qualify for Saturday’s eight-rider finals. Torah Bright of Australia finished 11th, Tahoe Paradise’s Jamie Anderson was 12th (37.70) and
